Races: Kalani, Light Elves
The Light Elves stand between 5 and 6 feet tall, and while nimble, their are somewhat weak of constitution. Kalani have silver or blonde hair and amber or violet eyes, their skin is a golden tan. Kalani do not possess as extremely pointed ears as their Aikari or Orferi kin. Kalani are extremely fond of ornate clothing of a baroque style, which often says a great deal about an individuals rank within the community. They often spend a great deal of time styling their hair elaborately, and are seen as exceedingly vain by other races.
Kalani society is deeply structured, with great importance placed upon heritage, which most noble Kalani can trace back thousands of years to the first Kalani king. Those who cannot trace their heritage along such direct lines are commoners, despite most nobles heritage being an intricate web only distantly related to the first king, who is seen as the Kalani source of magic ability. Kalani nobles comprise the most important roles in society, being rulers, judges, warriors, and sages.
Nobles are structured as an extremely complex arrangement of dukes, counts, earls and knights, all who are under the direct control of the Regent. Duels and assassinations are common among the upper class, as these can result in direct promotion of status.
Despite their vanity, the Kalani have a deep respect and bond with the natural world, and their towns and cities reflect this, blending with and complementing the natural landscape. Kalani architecture is admired worldwide for its graceful curves and arches. Most buildings are crafted of stone, for it is one of the few materials that stands the test of time. Fountains, ponds, and aqueducts are another staple of even commoner homes.
Light elves are primarily horticulturists, growing most of their own food in large, and sometimes grand gardens. Kalani wines are second only to those of Krathnian vintage.
Arcane magic is the primary pursuit of many Kalani, and their main exports are magical items and constructs. Most homes have a least one small golem, which are used as servants and workers for mundane tasks.
However there is a dark side to Kalani society. Commoners are the general laborers and backbone of their society, and are often indentured servants. It is also very dangerous for those who cannot navigate the politic currents, and many outsiders have found themselves at the wrong end of a back alley knife.
The Kalani view themselves as superior, with greater intellect and beauty compared to the “coarser” races. To outsiders, Kalani cultural rules are insanely numerous and complex, and faux pas are unavoidable. Those Kalani who learn to see past their egos find other races admirable for their honesty and forwardness, and some seek to emulate this themselves. Humans are fascinating to most Kalani, as they always seem to be busy, a sharp contrast to typical elven life.
Alignment and Religion
Most Kalani are Lawful with no particular inclination towards good or evil. While most Kalani are arrogant and vain, those met while adventuring are usually far less big-headed than their kin. Those Kalani who are religious are usually worship Yumiel, the patron Aeon of the elves, but some choose to honor Mayar or Solis.
Those Kalani who choose to leave are usually exiles or those who have become disillusioned with their society. For some, the constant intrigue and machinations of noble life is infuriating. However, a majority of Kalani adventurers are commoners, because this is the only way for them to exceed the status of their birth.
